Young Councillors Gain Deeper Understanding of Their Power to Effect Change After Parliament Visit
Members of the school council from Hogarth Primary School in Brentwood have returned from a transformative visit to the Houses of Parliament with a heightened awareness of their ability to drive meaningful change. The trip to London provided these young leaders with a unique opportunity to observe how their local council work connects to the broader national political landscape.
Immersive Experience in the Heart of British Democracy
The pupils, ranging from Year 1 to Year 6, witnessed firsthand the ceremonial arrival of the Speaker of the House and listened intently to various parliamentary debates, including a lively discussion on mobile phone use. This immersive experience was meticulously organised by Brentwood MP Alex Burghart, who aimed to showcase politics on a grander scale to the school councillors.
Deputy headteacher Lauren King expressed her enthusiasm, stating: "It was a fantastic experience; really wonderful. The school councillors had a really fabulous time." She elaborated that the visit mirrored the students' own council activities, helping them grasp the significant power they hold to implement changes within their school environment.
Enriching Conversations and Expanded Knowledge
Beyond understanding their own roles, the trip offered the young councillors valuable insights into the functions of MPs and the Prime Minister. It sparked engaging conversations around core democratic principles, the legal system, and fundamental British values. King noted, "They amazed me with their knowledge of kings and queens and asked really amazing questions during the visit. It was a real opportunity to enrich their learning."
This educational journey not only reinforced their existing knowledge but also inspired them to think critically about governance and civic responsibility, empowering a new generation to actively participate in shaping their communities.
