This year's A-level results have been hailed as a success, with a record number of students securing their preferred university places. According to national figures, almost 229,000 18-year-olds have been accepted into their first-choice university, while more than 31,000 have secured a place at their insurance choice. The proportion of A-level grades marked A* or A has also risen across the board.
Birmingham's standout success stories
In Birmingham, one of the standout achievements is that of Dominic Pugaciauskas, a pupil at Solihull School, who achieved an A* in Mathematics at A-level – at just 12 years old. He scored an astounding 296 out of 300 marks.

Students celebrate at Holyhead School and Fairfax Academy
Handsworth student Saima Tawhid, from Holyhead School, achieved an A* in mathematics, an A in further mathematics, and a C in Chemistry. She has been accepted to study an Integrated Masters in Mathematics at the University of Birmingham. Reflecting on her results, she said: "What a journey! I’m so glad all of those hours spent working and focusing so hard by myself were worth it! Two months of worrying about my results are now over and I can look forward to enjoying my life!"
Almost half of students at Fairfax Academy’s Sixth Form in Sutton Coldfield achieved grades A–B, and pass rates rose to 97% at King Edward VI Handsworth Wood Girls’ Academy Sixth Form.
Solihull School records 'best ever' results
Solihull School has announced its 'best ever' A-level results, with 88% of all grades at A* to B and 63% of all grades at A* to A. Some 77 students achieved three or more A* to A grades, and 96% of all students obtained a place at their chosen university.
Isabelle Agbonlahor-Lane earned 3 A*s in Business, Geography and Psychology at Arthur Terry School and Sixth Form in Sutton Coldfield, securing her place to study Psychology at the University of Liverpool.
