Pupils at a Derby special school received an inspiring visit from the UK's fastest deaf racing driver, who shared his remarkable journey into motorsport during the school's annual open day.
Racing Driver Shares His Story
Caleb McDuff, who has made a name for himself in competitive racing, visited The Royal School for the Deaf to deliver a powerful message about resilience to pupils, families, and staff. He emphasized that his deafness is an integral part of his identity but has never hindered his pursuit of success on the track.
During his address, McDuff said: “It’s an honour to be here and share my story. If there’s one message I want pupils to take away, it’s that being deaf is part of who you are – but it should never define what you can achieve.”
He went on to explain the challenges of racing, noting: “In racing, things go wrong all the time. What matters is how you respond. I just kept showing up, kept learning and kept pushing forward.”
Open Day Celebrations
The visit was part of the school's annual open day, which brought together families, staff, and the wider community to celebrate pupil achievements. The event featured an awards assembly, a performance by the school choir, and a creative competition where pupils designed a custom helmet for the racing driver.
McDuff was particularly touched by a personal gift from a pupil, saying: “I was genuinely moved by the framed artwork a pupil created for me. The effort and thought behind it means a great deal to me, and it’s something I’ll always remember.”

Derby Mayor Jonathan Smale attended the event and was impressed by the school's atmosphere. He remarked: “This is my first visit to the school and I can immediately see why it is so highly regarded. Being here has been genuinely inspiring. It has made me want to learn sign language so I can better connect with the deaf community in Derby.”
Headteacher Paul Burrows expressed gratitude for McDuff's visit, stating: “We are extremely grateful to Caleb for taking the time to visit and share his story. He has shown our pupils that being deaf is not a barrier to achieving success at the highest level.”
Burrows also highlighted the importance of the open day, adding: “It has been wonderful to welcome families into the school and celebrate everything our pupils have achieved. The sense of community here is something really special.”
