Barking and Dagenham College has named Paul Edeh, a Level 3 Protective Services student, as its Student of the Year, recognising his outstanding academic performance, leadership, and commitment to the college community. The award, selected by Principal and CEO Natalie Davison, was the highlight of the annual End-of-Year Awards ceremony.
Exceptional Academic Achievement
Paul maintains a 95 per cent attendance record and is on track to achieve triple distinction grades, demonstrating remarkable dedication and focus. His academic success is matched by his active role as a student representative, where he ensures student voices are heard in learner voice meetings.
Balancing Education with Caregiving
Outside college, Paul is a young carer, supporting his autistic brother with additional learning difficulties while helping his mother. Despite these responsibilities, he remains highly motivated, serving as a powerful example of resilience and perseverance.
Leadership Recognised by External Organisations
Paul's leadership skills have been praised by multiple external bodies. At the Skills Show in February, an Army Lance Corporal commended his exceptional leadership during a team challenge. Instructors from Call of the Wild selected him to lead a challenging river exercise. A London Fire Brigade lead officer said he would gladly recommend Paul for their recruitment pathway.
Community and Advocacy Work
Paul was invited by the Principal to attend a strategic meeting on knife crime prevention, representing Level 3 students. He also volunteered on his day off to lead the Remembrance Day parade march and played a leading role in Men's Mental Health Day activities, collaborating with health and social care students.
Future Prospects
Paul is considering officer training at Royal Military Academy Sandhurst or a career with the London Fire Brigade or Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. Principal Natalie Davison stated: "Paul embodies the very best of Barking & Dagenham College. His dedication to his studies, commitment to supporting others, and resilience in the face of personal challenges are truly inspiring. He is an exceptional role model, and we are incredibly proud to name him our Student of the Year."
