Chilton and Upton Schools Host NSPCC Number Day 2026 with Maths Fun
Two schools in Kent, Chilton Primary in Ramsgate and Upton Junior School in Broadstairs, celebrated the annual NSPCC Number Day 2026 with a burst of mathematical enthusiasm and charitable spirit. The events featured engaging activities, creative costumes, and fundraising efforts to support the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.
Chilton Primary's Countdown-Style Competition
At Chilton Primary, a special assembly led by teachers Nicki Cotton and Helen Rowland-Hill kicked off the day with a Countdown-style quiz. This four-round competition tested pupils on times tables and spelling knowledge, encouraging problem-solving strategies and resilience. Teams represented the school's four houses: Romans, Normans, Saxons, and Vikings, with the Normans emerging victorious after a closely contested match. Every participant received a prize for their involvement.
Teachers Dave Wheeler handled scoring, while Luke Oxley managed the Maths corner and Carol Isaac served as the dictionary expert for the spelling round. Beyond the competition, the day was filled with mathematical learning activities tailored to each year group's skills. In the week leading up to the event, children focused on practical maths without formal bookwork, enjoying hands-on games and tasks on the day itself.
Creative costumes added a vibrant touch, with pupils and staff dressing as times table rock star characters, creating a colourful display throughout the school. Deputy Head Hannah Cheshire emphasized the dual goals of donating to charity through a non-uniform day and raising awareness of the NSPCC's essential work. Head of School Alex McAuley praised the enthusiasm of children, families, and staff, noting that the event raised around £200, with more donations expected.
Upton Junior School's Rock Star Theme
Meanwhile, at Upton Junior School in Broadstairs, pupils and staff showcased their creativity with outrageous rock star outfits and costumes depicting maths numbers and symbols. The school celebrated NSPCC Number Day 2026, raising £262 so far, with donations still coming in, to support the charity's mission of keeping children safe from abuse.
Head of School Darci Arthur highlighted the importance of fundraising for the NSPCC's helpline and crucial work. Maths Lead Maisie Prescott described the day's activities, starting with an assembly on the charity's significance, followed by a whole-school maths challenge. Pupils dressed as digits or their favourite times table rockstars, donating to the charity in lieu of uniform.
They engaged in fun, interactive activities such as escape rooms, treasure maps, and mathematical art and music, fostering enthusiasm for learning. The event provided an opportunity to explore diverse elements of maths while supporting teamwork and communication skills.
Community Impact and School Partnership
Both Chilton Primary and Upton Junior School are part of the Viking Academy Trust, along with partner school Ramsgate Arts Primary. These events not only promoted mathematical engagement but also strengthened community ties and charitable awareness. The combined efforts of pupils, staff, and families underscored the schools' commitment to supporting worthwhile causes throughout the year.
As the schools continue to count donations, the success of NSPCC Number Day 2026 serves as a testament to the power of education and charity working hand in hand.
