Coleg Cambria Students Raise Thousands for Veterans Through Poppy Appeal
Students Raise £2,911 for Veterans at Coleg Cambria

Uniformed Public Service (UPS) learners at Coleg Cambria's Deeside campus have once again showcased their unwavering dedication to community service, raising a significant sum of money to support Armed Forces veterans. Following more than thirty hours of dedicated volunteering efforts across Flintshire, the students have made a tangible impact on a vital cause.

Substantial Funds Raised for Royal British Legion

Level 2 and Level 3 UPS students recently devoted their time to assisting the Royal British Legion, volunteering in key locations such as Queensferry, Connah’s Quay, and the surrounding areas. Their commitment culminated in the collection of a total of £2,911, with all proceeds directed towards the Royal British Legion Remembrance Campaign.

The final fundraising total was officially confirmed by Flintshire Poppy Appeal co-ordinator Colin Sargeant, who acknowledged the profound contribution made by the students within the local community. This recognition underscores the importance of their efforts in supporting veterans and remembrance initiatives.

Educators Praise Student Commitment

Jason Ferguson, UPS tutor at the Deeside campus, expressed immense pride in the learners' achievements. He remarked, "As a result of all the hard work and efforts of our Level 2 and Level 3 students we managed to raise a lot of money, which has gone towards the Royal British Legion Remembrance Campaign and to support our veterans."

This latest fundraising success is not an isolated event but builds upon an already impressive track record of charitable work by the UPS learners. Their dedication to community causes has been consistently demonstrated over the years.

A Legacy of Charitable Support

In the previous academic year, UPS learners at Deeside raised thousands of pounds for a variety of community charities as part of their Welsh Baccalaureate Global Community Project. The causes supported included:

  • The Domestic Abuse Safety Unit (DASU) in Shotton
  • The Teenage Cancer Trust

Their fundraising activities were diverse and engaging, encompassing sponsored walks, canoeing challenges, and staff versus student netball matches. This multifaceted approach not only raised funds but also fostered teamwork and community engagement.

Longstanding Partnership with Royal British Legion

The continued support for the Royal British Legion holds particular significance for the UPS programme. In a single year previously, learners contributed up to £4,000, and over the past decade, their total fundraising contribution for this Armed Forces charity has exceeded £40,000. This demonstrates a sustained and impactful commitment to supporting veterans.

Jason Ferguson added, "Every year the students and staff go over and above to raise as much as they can for charity, and this year was no different. I can’t thank them enough." This sentiment reflects the culture of generosity and effort that permeates the college community.

College Values in Action

Fellow UPS lecturer Lucy Roberts highlighted how these achievements embody the core values of Coleg Cambria. She stated, "Through creativity, teamwork and determination, our students have shown true community spirit and compassion. This latest success is something everyone at Coleg Cambria can be immensely proud of."

Mark-Ryan Hughes from Calon, the college’s Department of Fundraising and Volunteering, also commended the initiative. He noted, "This is a fantastic example of the impact our learners can make through charity and volunteering, and a real credit to everyone involved."

The collective efforts of the UPS learners at Coleg Cambria Deeside serve as a powerful testament to the positive role that educational institutions can play in fostering civic responsibility and supporting vital community causes. Their work not only provides financial assistance to veterans but also enriches the students' own educational experience through practical, real-world engagement.
