Birmingham is set to experience a sweltering heatwave, with temperatures potentially reaching 31C, as the UK Health and Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued an amber heat-health alert for the city and the West Midlands. The alert is in effect until 8pm on Tuesday, June 23, marking the first significant heatwave of June and summer, following the last 30C recorded in May.
Met Office Forecast
The Met Office forecast explains: "Spells of rain in the northwest edging slowly southeast with showers following. Low cloud and coastal mist in the west and southwest. Drier elsewhere with sunny spells. Very warm or hot in the southeast and feeling muggy." It adds: "Rain continues southeast and eases overnight. Clear spells and isolated showers into the northwest, where a little fresher. Warm and muggy in the south and southeast."
Saturday's outlook continues: "Rather cloudy at first with a little light rain in the south. Isolated showers in the north. Generally dry with sunny spells developing for most. Feeling a little less warm." For the weekend, it says: "Turning more settled into the weekend as high pressure starts to build from the south. Sunny spells and feeling increasingly hot with temperatures well above the June average." Many areas will meet the official heatwave criteria: three consecutive days above a threshold varying from 25 to 28C across the UK.
