The UK is set for a dramatic wintry turn this week as forecasters predict heavy snowfall and plummeting temperatures. Weather maps indicate a significant Arctic front will sweep across the country, bringing a blanket of snow and a bitter chill.
A 330-Mile Snowfall Wall Approaches
Meteorologists from WXCharts are tracking a massive 330-mile stretch of snow moving towards the UK. This Arctic system is expected to deliver snowfall across England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. The most intense conditions are forecast for Friday, 5th December, with some areas bracing for up to four to five inches of snow.
Nine counties in England have been named as particularly at risk. These include Derbyshire, Yorkshire, Lancashire, Staffordshire, Cumbria, Northumberland, and Durham. The deep freeze is predicted to spread from Aberystwyth in Wales up to Aviemore in Scotland by Friday evening.
Bitter Temperatures and Widespread Disruption
Alongside the snow, a severe temperature drop is expected. Parts of the country could see the mercury fall to a bone-chilling -6°C, with widespread lows of -2°C anticipated. Northern Ireland will also feel the freeze, with temperatures hovering around 0°C to -1°C.
The north of Wales is forecast to see the heaviest accumulation, potentially receiving five inches of snow. The north west of England, the Midlands, and southern regions are also in line for torrential downpours and wintry showers, with existing flood warnings in place for England and Wales.
Weekend Thaw and Long-Range Outlook
The icy grip is expected to loosen slightly over the weekend. The Met Office forecasts a return to unsettled but milder conditions by Saturday, with minimal chances of snow and temperatures closer to the seasonal average.
Their long-range prediction for 6th to 15th December suggests a continuation of wet and breezy weather, with further showers and spells of rain likely across the country. The forecast indicates that frost and fog will be less common in this unsettled period.
Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest travel information and weather warnings as the week progresses.
