Solihull Council has confirmed the exact date for the launch of its new weekly food waste recycling collection. Starting Monday, 5 October, residents across Solihull will benefit from a service designed to convert food waste into renewable energy and fertiliser for local farms.
What Residents Need to Do
Households with individual bins or sacks will receive two caddies delivered between August and September: a 7-litre kitchen caddy and a 23-litre lockable outdoor caddy to deter pests. A guide will accompany the caddies. All food waste—such as plate scrapings, peelings, and tea bags—should be placed in the kitchen caddy, excluding liquids. When full, empty it into the outdoor caddy for collection on the normal day.
Changes to Rubbish Collection
With more recycling, most households will see rubbish collected fortnightly instead of weekly from 5 October. Recycling and garden waste collections (if subscribed) remain unchanged.
Councillor Ken Hawkins, Cabinet Member for Environment and Infrastructure, stated: “We’re excited to launch this new weekly service. Over 30% of Solihull household waste is food waste, and the average UK family discards up to £1,000 of edible food yearly. This service helps cut waste, save money, and create a cleaner, greener Solihull. Food waste will be turned into fertiliser and renewable energy, not burned.”
