The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) now allows households to receive free air conditioning units valued at up to £2,500, following a rule change by the Labour Party government. The scheme, which previously focused on heating, has been expanded to include air-to-air heat pumps that provide both heating and cooling.
How the Scheme Works
According to Checkatrade, installing an air conditioning unit typically costs £1,900 on average. However, through the BUS, families can get cooling systems installed completely free of charge. The scheme offers grants of £2,500 specifically for air-to-air heat pumps in residential properties.
Official Statements
Labour Party Minister for Energy Consumers Martin McCluskey previously stated: “Air-to-air heat pumps offer the best of both worlds – keeping you warm in winter while cooling you down when summer comes along.” He added: “With heat pumps more popular than ever, we want to make sure as many people as possible can benefit, especially those in flats or small homes without central heating, so they have greater choice when upgrading their property.”
Eligibility and Application Process
Ofgem, the scheme administrator, explained: "This scheme is open in England and Wales. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a government scheme that provides upfront grants to help reduce the cost of installing heat pumps and biomass boilers in homes and non-domestic buildings." The scheme is installer-led, meaning property owners must work with an MCS certified installer who can apply for and redeem vouchers on their behalf. Ofgem processes voucher applications and payments, monitors compliance, and publishes guidance, while the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero oversees policy and legislation.
Impact and Benefits
This change allows households to access free cooling systems, reducing the financial burden of installing air conditioning. The grant covers the full £2,500 cost for air-to-air heat pumps, making it an attractive option for those in flats or small homes without existing central heating. The scheme aims to increase energy efficiency and comfort in homes across England and Wales.
