BBC Countryfile presenter and farmer Adam Henson has shared thrilling news from his Cotswold Farm Park, announcing that his beloved Suffolk Punch mare, Lexy, is expecting a foal in May 2026.
A 'Big Deal' for Rare Breed Conservation
In a heartfelt piece for BBC Countryfile Magazine, Henson revealed the pregnancy, describing it as a "big deal". The excitement stems from the critically endangered status of the Suffolk Punch breed. Henson emphasised that the era when these powerful horses were commonly used for farm work and pulling drays is "long gone", leading to a drastic decline in their population.
According to the farmer, there are now fewer than 500 Suffolk Punch horses globally, with a mere 75 breeding females left in the UK. The Rare Breeds Survival Trust classifies the striking chestnut-coloured breed, which can weigh over a tonne, as "critically endangered" due to this scarcity.
Hopes for a Healthy Newcomer in 2026
While looking ahead to 2026 and expressing hopes for more favourable weather for farmers, Henson confirmed his primary focus is on Lexy. "Our livestock will be thankful for less dramatic conditions, too - one animal in particular," he wrote, referring to the expectant mare, a firm favourite with visitors to the 50-acre park.
Henson's main concern is ensuring a "trouble-free birth" for Lexy, with the ultimate wish being for a "fit and healthy" foal. The arrival will mark a significant event for the farm's conservation efforts and for the survival of the breed itself.
Pregnancy Announcement and Scans
The pregnancy was first hinted at earlier in 2025. In July, Henson teased "big news" in a YouTube video and on his Instagram, showing a clip of Lexy with the caption: "Lexy's back - and she's brought big news."
In another social media post, he featured Alison from Holbeache Stud, who cares for the horses. After Henson joked the suspense was "killing" him, Alison confirmed, "OK, she is in foal." She also verified that Lexy had undergone two positive pregnancy scans to check the foal's heartbeat, with the due date set for May next year.
