Free Conservation Event on Crompton Moor to Enhance Wetland Habitat
In collaboration with the City of Trees initiative in Manchester, which focuses on planting trees and restoring woodlands across the region, the Friends of Crompton Moor are organizing a free open-access conservation event. This charitable organization, run entirely by dedicated volunteers, is committed to the upkeep and maintenance of Crompton Moor, an area renowned for its natural beauty.
Event Details and Activities
The event is scheduled for Friday, May 1, starting at approximately 10am and running until the work is completed, with an expected finish time around 3pm. Volunteers will gather at the Brushes Clough car park, accessible via the lane next to Shore Edge Methodist Chapel on Buckstones Road in Shaw, with the postcode OL2 8LS. Participants are welcome to drop in for just an hour or stay for the entire day, as all necessary tools will be provided, and no prior experience is required.
The primary focus of this May Day activity will be on maintenance work related to new and existing leaky dams, aimed at preserving a healthy and sustainable wetland. This wetland is crucial for supporting local wildlife and enhancing the experience for the hundreds of daily visitors who enjoy walking in this fabulous countryside.
Who Can Participate and What to Bring
The event is open to anyone, including children aged 16 and older if accompanied by an adult, offering a fantastic opportunity to give back to the community. Attendees are advised to wear appropriate outdoor clothing and footwear suitable for the weather and conditions, and to bring a packed lunch. Throughout the day, complimentary tea, coffee, water, and biscuits will be available to all volunteers.
Community Impact and Further Involvement
Crompton Moor is home to a wide range of wildlife and is cherished by many from the Shaw area and beyond. Mic Norbury, Chair of the Friends of Crompton Moor, expressed enthusiasm for community involvement, stating, "Even if people aren't available to attend our May Day Event, if they are interested in volunteering their time to help us with our conservation work on another occasion or simply would like to become a Member of the Friends of Crompton Moor, we would be delighted to hear from them."
For those interested in joining future efforts or becoming members, the Friends of Crompton Moor can be contacted by phoning the Secretary, Marian Herod, at 07792 156295 or by emailing cromptonmoor@gmail.com. This event underscores the importance of community-driven conservation efforts in maintaining and protecting local natural spaces for generations to come.
