Hertfordshire's Hedgerow Heroes Plant Over 2km of New Wildlife Corridors
This winter, more than 140 dedicated volunteers have successfully planted over two kilometres of new native hedgerows across Hertfordshire as part of the Hedgerow Heroes initiative run by CPRE Hertfordshire. The project, which collaborates closely with farmers and local communities, has established vital green corridors at key locations including the Woodhall Estate in East Hertfordshire and Lannock Farm, renowned as the home of the Groundswell regenerative farming festival.
Boosting Biodiversity and Carbon Storage
Hundreds of young hedge saplings have been carefully planted, with these new boundaries expected to grow into dense, species-rich habitats in the coming years. Hedgerows are a quintessential feature of the English countryside, providing essential food, shelter, and nesting sites for a wide array of wildlife such as birds, pollinators, and small mammals. Additionally, they play a crucial role in storing carbon, protecting soil from erosion, and connecting fragmented habitats to support ecological networks.
The project has received valuable support from Herts and Middlesex Butterfly Conservation to ensure the planting benefits threatened species, notably the white-letter hairstreak butterfly, which depends on elm trees for survival. This initiative is part of a broader national campaign by the Campaign to Protect Rural England aimed at restoring hedgerows and strengthening nature networks across the country.
Community and Corporate Collaboration
Project officer James Lunt expressed that it has been 'inspiring to see so many volunteers come together' for this cause. Chief executive Abby Coften praised the diverse range of groups involved, from students and community members to corporate volunteers, all contributing to support and enhance the local countryside. Their collective efforts highlight a strong community spirit and commitment to environmental stewardship.
