New research has unveiled the precise temperature settings for washing machines that can dramatically reduce household energy costs by up to 62%. With washing machines accounting for approximately 10% of a typical home's energy expenditure, adjusting these settings offers a significant opportunity for savings.
Expert Insights on Temperature Adjustments
Rebecca Jakeman, a senior researcher and writer at the consumer group Which?, explains that simply switching laundry cycles to 20°C or 30°C can lead to substantial reductions in energy use. "We've tested a range of washing machines to see how washing at lower temperatures affects cleaning and energy use," she stated. "On average, switching from 40°C to 30°C saved 38% energy, and washing at 20°C saved 62%."
Jakeman added that modern washing machines, especially top-rated models, perform effectively at these lower temperatures for most everyday laundry needs, unless dealing with heavily soiled items.
Practical Laundry Recommendations
For routine washing, experts advise using 30°C programmes for items such as:
- T-shirts and casual wear
- Jeans and denim
- Activewear and gym clothes
- Workwear and office attire
Washing at lower temperatures not only saves money but also helps preserve garment quality by reducing fabric deterioration, colour fading, and shrinkage caused by repeated exposure to high heat.
When Higher Temperatures Are Necessary
Higher temperature washes at 60°C or 90°C remain essential for specific cleaning requirements:
- 60°C washes: Recommended for towels, bed linen, and infant clothing to ensure optimal hygiene and bacteria elimination.
- 90°C washes: Primarily needed for tea towels and cleaning materials that encounter harmful household bacteria.
These higher settings should be reserved for intensive cleaning tasks where elevated heat is crucial for sanitisation.
