UK Households Face Losing £150 Energy Bill Discount After Deadline Passes

Eligible UK households who failed to take action by Friday, February 27, now risk missing out on a crucial £150 discount on their energy bills. Under the Warm Home Discount scheme, administered by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), a small number of recipients were required to make a phone call to secure the rebate for the winter of 2025/2026.

Automatic Payments and Required Actions

The DESNZ has confirmed that 96% of Warm Home Discount recipients in England and Wales will receive the £150 rebate automatically this winter. However, for a minority of households, proactive steps were necessary. These individuals received letters containing a helpline number, which they needed to call by the February 27 deadline to ensure efficient processing of their discount.

"Those who have not received a letter or the discount but think they are eligible should call 0800 030 9322 by 27 February," stated the department in a recent warning. The helpline remains active for verification purposes, but the deadline for securing the discount has now passed.

Expanded Eligibility and Payment Details

This year, the Warm Home Discount scheme, a Labour Party government initiative, has been expanded to include 2.7 million more households. This brings the total number of eligible households across England, Scotland, and Wales to over 6 million. The scheme provides £150 annually towards energy costs, offering significant relief amid rising bills.

Typically, the discount is applied directly to electricity bills. However, households supplied by the same provider for both gas and electricity may request the rebate on their gas bill instead. To arrange this, contact with the energy supplier is required, though this must be done promptly to avoid missing out.

Scam Warnings and Genuine Communications

Martin Lewis' team at Money Saving Expert has issued a critical warning regarding scams related to the Warm Home Discount. "If you receive any emails, calls or texts requesting information in relation to your eligibility for the Warm Home Discount these are scams, so never click links or share your bank details," they advised.

Genuine eligibility is confirmed only through a physical letter from the government. Households uncertain about the authenticity of their letter should verify by calling the official helpline at 0800 030 9322. This step is essential to protect against fraud and ensure compliance with the scheme's requirements.

The missed deadline highlights the importance of timely action for government support programs, with many households now facing the loss of this valuable financial assistance.
