McDonald's UK Announces Major Menu Reduction for Vegetarian Options
McDonald's has confirmed a significant overhaul of its UK menu, with nearly all vegetarian and vegan options set to be removed from next week. The fast-food giant will cease selling several popular meat-free products from February 3, leaving just one plant-based item on its core offering.
Which Items Are Being Removed?
The company will stop selling four key vegetarian products across its UK restaurants:
- Veggie Dippers
- Veggie Dipper Happy Meals
- Spicy Veggie Wraps
- Vegetable Deluxe sandwich
This dramatic reduction means that from next week, only the McPlant Burger will remain as a vegetarian and vegan option on McDonald's standard UK menu. The decision represents a substantial contraction of the chain's plant-based offerings that had been gradually expanding in recent years.
Customer Feedback Drives Menu Changes
A McDonald's spokesperson explained the reasoning behind the significant menu changes, stating: "We're always listening to our customers to help inform and evolve our menu. After reviewing feedback, alongside the sales data of our Veggie Dippers, it's clear this product does not match the appeal of McPlant for our vegetarian customers."
The spokesperson continued: "That's why we've made the decision to remove them from the menu from February 3, as we focus on developing better vegetarian options that meet our high standards. While McPlant remains a firm fan favourite and will continue to be the go-to choice for our vegetarian and vegan customers, we recognise these changes may be disappointing for some."
Weak Demand Leads to Menu Cuts
According to reports, weak customer demand across much of McDonald's vegetarian and vegan range ultimately prompted the menu reductions. The Daily Express indicates that sales performance for these items failed to meet expectations, leading to the strategic decision to streamline offerings.
The McDonald's spokesperson added: "We are actively learning from other markets to understand which vegetarian and vegan options are proving most popular and exploring exciting new offerings that we know customers will love."
Vegetarian Customers Express Disappointment
The announcement has left many vegetarian customers disappointed, as it significantly reduces their choices when visiting McDonald's UK restaurants. The removal of multiple options means those seeking meat-free alternatives will have just one core menu item to select from, potentially limiting appeal for vegetarian and vegan diners.
This menu restructuring comes as McDonald's continues to evaluate customer preferences and market trends across its UK operations. The company emphasises its commitment to developing improved vegetarian options in future, though current offerings will be substantially reduced from next week's implementation date.
