Birmingham City Council has confirmed that recycling bin collections across the city will resume from Monday 24 July 2023, following a temporary suspension that began in early July. The pause was implemented due to a shortage of drivers and crew members, which had affected the city's waste and recycling services.
Collection Schedule and Guidance
Residents are advised to check their individual collection dates via the council's online waste collection calendar. The council has urged households to put their bins out by 7am on their scheduled day, as crews will be working to catch up on missed collections. Normal service is expected to be fully restored over the following weeks.
During the pause, the council had asked residents to store their recycling and not present it for collection. Now, with the restart, any extra recycling that has accumulated can be placed in clear plastic bags or cardboard boxes next to the green recycling bin on the first collection day.
Impact on Waste Services
The recycling collection suspension was part of wider disruption to the city's waste services, which also saw some general waste and garden waste collections affected. The council has apologized for the inconvenience and thanked residents for their patience. A spokesperson for Birmingham City Council said: "We are delighted to confirm that recycling collections will restart from Monday 24 July. We know how important these services are to our residents, and we have been working hard to resolve the staffing issues."
According to the council, the driver shortage was primarily due to a combination of factors, including a national shortage of HGV drivers and local recruitment challenges. The council has been actively recruiting and training new drivers to stabilize the service.
Long-Term Plans
Birmingham City Council has outlined plans to improve the resilience of its waste collection services, including investing in new vehicles and exploring alternative collection methods. The council is also reviewing its waste strategy to increase recycling rates and reduce landfill use. In the interim, residents are encouraged to continue recycling as much as possible and to report any missed collections after the restart date.
The confirmation of the restart provides relief for many Birmingham residents who had expressed frustration over the temporary suspension. The council has assured that all recycling collected will be processed as usual at its recycling facilities.
