Cefn Resident Named 'Hedgehog Hero' in Urgent Wildlife Campaign
Sue Jurkojc, a resident of Cefn, has been celebrated as a "local hedgehog hero" after receiving a complimentary hedgehog house kit. This initiative forms part of a critical community-led effort to reverse the alarming decline of hedgehog populations across Wrexham County Borough.
A Growing Wildlife Campaign
The presentation of the kit represents the latest advancement in an expanding wildlife campaign. This project is being delivered through Cefn Community Council's Hedgehog Ambassador role and its broader local nature champion work, which also includes Swift Ambassador activities. Financial support for the initiative comes from the Local Places for Nature fund, with contributions from Wrexham Council and the Welsh Government.
Campaign organizers emphasize that this effort extends far beyond simple garden wildlife enhancement. They describe it as a race against time to safeguard one of Britain's most cherished yet increasingly threatened animals. Hedgehogs, once a common presence in gardens and hedgerows, now face severe pressures. These include habitat loss, fragmented green spaces, dangers from roads, and diminishing access to secure nesting areas. Their survival, foraging, and breeding depend heavily on interconnected gardens and adequate shelter.
Urgent Call to Action
As nocturnal mammals, hedgehogs can traverse considerable distances in a single night while searching for food and mates. This behavior underscores how local actions across streets, estates, and entire communities can have a profound impact on their conservation.
Community Development Officer Andrew Ruscoe stressed the urgency of the situation. "Hedgehogs need our help now," he stated. "In some rural areas, hedgehog numbers have plummeted by up to 75 percent since the year 2000. Across Great Britain, they are officially classified as vulnerable to extinction. Since we were awarded the Ambassador title, we have distributed over 71 Hedgehog House kits throughout the borough."
He further explained that each secure garden can become a vital component of a larger survival network for the species. "A mother hedgehog typically gives birth to an average litter of four or five hoglets, sometimes as many as seven, although usually only two to three are successfully weaned. If these houses are utilized, they could significantly contribute to hedgehog recovery in Wrexham. Every single safe garden is important."
Community Praise and Participation
According to the council, the hedgehog house kits are designed to provide residents with a practical method to support local wildlife. They help create sheltered spaces where hedgehogs can rest, nest, and potentially raise their young.

"I'm so excited to receive my hedgehog house kit and I'm truly grateful to everyone involved," she shared.
