Dog owners throughout England have received a critical alert to steer clear of puddles and floodwater due to a potentially deadly bacterial threat. This warning comes after extensive periods of rainfall, with some regions experiencing over 30 consecutive days of precipitation since Christmas, including areas like Worcestershire in the West Midlands.
Leptospirosis: A Severe Health Hazard
The primary concern is leptospirosis, a dangerous bacteria that thrives in standing water. Vets Now, the United Kingdom's foremost provider of out-of-hours and emergency pet care, emphasizes that puddles and floodwaters serve as breeding grounds for this pathogen. The bacteria is commonly spread through water contaminated with urine from infected animals, particularly rats.
If left untreated, leptospirosis can lead to severe complications in dogs, such as kidney or liver failure. In humans, it can cause Weil's disease, making it a dual threat to both pets and their owners.
Expert Insights and Recommendations
Sadie Spencer, a leading emergency veterinarian at Vets Now, highlighted the increased risks during flooding events. "When flooding occurs, we often see an elevated risk of dogs being exposed to contaminated water," she stated. "Dogs may contract the infection simply by walking through or drinking from floodwater. Avoiding such areas where possible and recognizing early signs of illness can be crucial for a pet's recovery."
She also advised owners to minimize contact with floodwater and to wash their hands thoroughly after handling wet dogs to prevent human infection.
The PDSA reinforced this warning, noting that leptospirosis is a very serious disease. "Some dogs recover if they receive prompt veterinary assistance, but those with more severe symptoms often succumb during the early stages or become so ill that euthanasia is necessary, even with treatment," the organization explained.
Preventive Measures and Symptoms to Watch For
Vaccination is identified as the best preventive strategy. Yearly vaccinations are available, with options covering two strains (L2) or four strains (L4) of Leptospira bacteria to provide broader protection.
Dog owners should be vigilant for symptoms, which include:
- Jaundice, characterized by yellow gums and eyes
- Vomiting and diarrhoea
- Lethargy and lack of appetite
- Weight loss
- Coughing and difficulty breathing
- Increased thirst and urination
