Rossendale Ramblers Embrace Winter Challenges on Scenic Group Hikes
Despite a forecast of cold and wet conditions, a determined group of sixteen ramblers turned out for a midweek walk, showcasing the resilience and spirit of the Rossendale Ramblers community. Setting off from Clowbridge, the party embarked on a challenging ascent of Liver Hill, followed by a descent to Water and a further climb to the trig point at Broad Clough.
Navigating Poor Visibility on a Nearly 10-Mile Trek
By the time the group reached Broad Clough, visibility had deteriorated significantly, prompting a sensible decision to shorten the route slightly. This adjustment avoided an additional ascent to Thieveley Pike, ensuring safety without compromising the adventure. Remarkably, the walk still covered nearly ten miles, a testament to the group's dedication and the robust planning of the organisers.
The weather offered a reprieve on Sunday, with improved conditions allowing twenty walkers to enjoy a seven-mile excursion from Irwell Vale. This route provided a diverse and historically rich experience, taking in the natural beauty of Dearden Wood and a visit to Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary.
Exploring Local History and Natural Beauty
The walk continued to the village of Chatterton, where a blue plaque serves as a poignant memorial to those killed during the weavers' uprising of 1826. This blend of physical activity, wildlife appreciation, and local history is a hallmark of the Ramblers' outings, offering more than just exercise.
Looking ahead, the group has scheduled two more enticing walks for early February. On Sunday, February 1st, a six-mile walk will commence from Walk Mill, visiting the picturesque Towneley Park, Pike Hill, and Red Lees. This walk is designed to conclude by 2pm, leaving ample time for weekend family commitments.
Upcoming Adventures in the Keighley Area
Subsequently, on Wednesday, February 4th, the Ramblers will venture to the Keighley area for a more substantial ten-mile hike. This route promises to explore the charming villages of Laycock and Goose Eye before tackling the open terrain of Keighley Moor.
All walks organised by the Rossendale Ramblers are free to attend for newcomers. However, after enjoying three walks, participants are encouraged to join The Ramblers association, with membership costing just £3.75 per month. This nominal fee supports the organisation's work in promoting walking and protecting public paths.
