Allestree Mother Becomes Face of Cancer Research UK Campaign After Personal Battle

Sam Rathling, a single mother-of-three from Allestree, has stepped into the spotlight as the ambassador for a new Cancer Research UK initiative. Her journey began in 2023 when she discovered a lump in her breast, prompting immediate action due to her family's history with the disease.

From Diagnosis to Treatment: A Family's Resilience

Following an aggressive grade three diagnosis, Sam underwent a lumpectomy, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. To help her 13-year-old neurodivergent daughter grasp the situation, they humorously nicknamed the tumour 'Larry the lump'. After the tumour was sent abroad for specialist testing, Sam told her children that Larry had been 'packed away' for a holiday to the United States.

In a touching display of support, both of Sam's daughters shaved their heads alongside her, initially raising £3,000 for charity. The 48-year-old business owner has since amassed a staggering £13,000 and has set an ambitious long-term goal of £100,000.

Advocating for Early Detection and Highlighting Regional Statistics

Sam is a passionate advocate for early detection, emphasizing that approximately 29,400 people are diagnosed with cancer in the East Midlands annually. Research indicates that while 1 in 2 people will face cancer in their lifetime, survival rates are improving across all demographics. For example, breast cancer survival has nearly doubled in the UK over the past 50 years, largely due to local fundraising efforts.

Recent data reveals that white women have the highest incidence of breast cancer at around 173 cases per 100,000, while Black and Asian women often encounter different diagnostic challenges, with rates of about 125 and 110 per 100,000 respectively. Sam attributes her recovery to early detection and treatments like anastrozole, a hormone therapy developed with assistance from Cancer Research UK.

Join the Fight: Race for Life Events in Derby

Local residents can follow Sam's inspiring example by participating in the Race for Life events at Markeaton Park on June 6 and 7. The weekend will feature 'Pretty Muddy' obstacle courses for children and adults, alongside traditional 5k and 10k running events. Jane Bullock, a spokesperson for the charity, notes that the event is non-competitive and welcomes everyone to walk, jog, or run at their own pace.

Sam recalls the challenges of balancing intensive treatment with running her marketing business and raising three children. She hopes her story encourages others in Derby to check their bodies regularly and consult a GP if something feels amiss. All funds raised from the Derby events will support new methods to prevent, diagnose, and treat cancer.
