Drivers using the M42 have been warned of a carriageway closure over the Bank Holiday weekend. The southbound section will be closed at Junction 6, Bickenhill Interchange, overnight from Sunday, August 30, until Monday, August 31.
The junction is a key route for drivers heading to Birmingham Airport. National Highways said the carriageway would be closed from 9pm tonight until 5am tomorrow due to maintenance work.
Overnight Closure Details
An alert issued by traffic monitoring service Inrix wrote: "Advance warning - M42 southbound blocked due to roadworks during the night at J6 A45 Coventry Road (Birmingham Airport / Coventry). From 9pm on the 30th to 4am on 31st August."
Diversions will be put in place along the "slip roads," Inrix added. Motorists are advised to plan alternative routes or allow extra travel time during the closure period.
Ongoing Speed Restrictions
It's the latest disruption facing drivers along this section of the motorway, with temporary speed restrictions with a 50mph limit currently in place. The reduced speed limit is in place on both carriageways between Junction 6 and Junction 9, Dunton Interchange.
This is due to long-running roadworks for HS2, with work taking place to install bridges over the motorway. The combination of the overnight closure and the ongoing speed restrictions is expected to affect travel times for airport-bound traffic and commuters using the M42 corridor.
