Birmingham Man Transforms Cancer Battle into Inspirational Book Project

Liam Kerry, a Birmingham resident diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer, turned his personal struggle into a source of comfort for others by creating a unique book designed for bathroom reading. His project, titled Flush Fiction, consists of one hundred short stories, each precisely one hundred words long, intended to be enjoyed in brief moments during treatment or daily routines.

A Creative Response to Adversity

The idea for Flush Fiction emerged during Liam's cancer treatment, as he spent extended periods in the bathroom due to his condition. Rather than focusing on his illness, he channeled his energy into crafting uplifting narratives to support individuals facing similar challenges. Liam, who passed away on January 11, 2026, at the age of 37, was known among friends for his boundless creativity and vibrant spirit.

His diverse interests included building arcade cabinets, trading guitars, playing frisbee golf, practicing calligraphy, engaging with Warhammer, model-making, attending live music events, and assembling care packages for homeless people. Following his diagnosis in 2022, Liam embarked on a difficult and unpredictable journey, marked by moments of hope and setbacks, yet he remained committed to maximizing his time through travel, social connections, and continuous writing.

The Journey of Flush Fiction

Liam worked on Flush Fiction between medical treatments, drawing inspiration from everyday experiences, conversations with friends, and interactions with his dog, Leo. The book features a wide array of genres, including fantasy, science fiction, dark humor, and reflections on ordinary life. Illustrations and cover artwork were contributed by his friend, Sally Finning.

Tragically, Liam passed away before completing the project, falling just one story short of his goal. Prior to his death, he granted permission for the book to be finished and published. The final piece, written as an editor's note, recounts Liam's own story, completing the collection in a manner that reflects his humor and humanity.

Legacy and Impact

Flush Fiction was published on February 10, 2026, less than a month after Liam's passing. A friend involved in the book's completion noted, "He didn't quite realize how close he was to finishing it. He was just one short. The final story wrote itself—it's the story of Liam." Described as funny, strange, dark, and deeply human, the book serves as a tribute to Liam's creativity and generosity, allowing readers to experience a part of his spirit.

Book sales have already raised over £600 for Bowel Cancer UK, with expectations for further contributions. This initiative highlights Liam's enduring impact on cancer support efforts in the Birmingham community and beyond.
