South Yorkshire Police have launched a murder investigation after a newborn baby girl was found dead at a flat in Sheffield on Sunday morning, August 30. Seven people have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in police custody.
Officers were called to a property on Holywell Heights in the Wincobank area of the city at approximately 5.58am following concerns raised by callers about the safety of a newborn baby. A search of the property led to the discovery of the infant, who was declared dead at the scene despite efforts by police and paramedics.
Seven arrested in connection with baby's death
Senior Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector Emma Knight confirmed that seven people have been arrested on suspicion of murder. All of them remain in police custody at this time. The investigation is in its early stages, and officers are working to determine the ages of some of those arrested.
Detective Chief Inspector Knight said: "We are aware news of this will be deeply concerning and I want to reassure our local communities that we have a dedicated team of detectives and officers hard at work to ensure justice is secured for the baby girl at the heart of this investigation."
Police appeal for information and urge against speculation
Detective Chief Inspector Knight also urged the public to avoid speculating about the incident while the investigation continues. "Our investigation is in its early stages and we would like to remind people to avoid speculating about this incident," she said.
Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward. Witnesses or anyone with details can contact South Yorkshire Police on 101, quoting incident 194 of August 30. Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
