A Birmingham woman has completed a 15-mile Moonwalk challenge, raising over £1,000 for the breast cancer charity Walk the Walk. The event took place on Saturday 11 May in London's Hyde Park, where thousands of participants walked through the night in decorated bras to raise funds for vital cancer research and support services.
The Challenge and Motivation
Sarah Jones, 34, from Kings Heath, took part in the Moonwalk London event, which challenges participants to walk either a half or full marathon distance while wearing brightly decorated bras. Jones chose the 15-mile half marathon option, completing the course in just under five hours. She was inspired to take part after her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022.
"My mum was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago, and it was a huge shock for our family. I wanted to do something positive to support her and help others going through the same thing," Jones said. "The Moonwalk was an incredible experience – walking through the night with thousands of other people all united for the same cause was truly emotional."
Fundraising and Impact
Jones set an initial fundraising target of £500 but has already raised over £1,000 through online donations and local fundraising events. The money will go to Walk the Walk, a UK charity that raises funds for breast cancer research, treatment, and support. The charity has raised over £150 million since its inception in 1996.
"I'm so grateful to everyone who donated and supported me. Every penny will make a difference in the fight against breast cancer," Jones added. Her fundraising page remains open for donations, and she hopes to continue raising awareness about the importance of early detection and research.
Community Support and Future Plans
Jones trained for three months leading up to the event, walking increasingly longer distances around Birmingham's parks and canals. She received support from friends, family, and local businesses, including a fundraising quiz night at a Kings Heath pub that raised over £200.
"The support from the Birmingham community has been amazing. People have been so generous and encouraging," Jones said. She is already considering taking part in the Moonwalk again next year, possibly attempting the full 26.2-mile marathon distance. "I'd love to do the full marathon next time. It's such a rewarding experience, and I know I can push myself further."
About Walk the Walk and the Moonwalk
Walk the Walk is a grant-making charity that raises money for breast cancer research and support. The Moonwalk events take place in several cities across the UK, including London, Edinburgh, and Glasgow. Participants are encouraged to decorate their bras in creative and colorful ways, with prizes awarded for the best designs. The charity emphasizes the importance of physical activity in reducing the risk of breast cancer and improving mental well-being.
Jones' achievement highlights the power of community fundraising and personal commitment in supporting vital health causes. Her efforts have not only raised funds but also inspired others in her community to consider taking part in similar challenges.
