CHILL, which stands for Cancer Help In Local Lives, is a volunteer-led support group in Bridgend that has been helping local people cope with the emotional impact of a cancer diagnosis for three years. Founded by individuals living with cancer, the group ensures no one faces treatment alone, offering a welcoming space for anyone affected by the disease.
Monthly Meetings at Pyle RFC
The group meets on the first Saturday of every month at Pyle RFC from 10am until noon. These sessions provide a supportive environment where attendees can share experiences and access expert advice. Some meetings feature guest speakers, while others focus on informal chats with people who truly understand the journey. Group members, who often juggle their own treatment, work, and family commitments, deliver vital support to adults and children across the wider community.
Care Packages and Campaigns
In addition to monthly meetings, CHILL volunteers create and distribute special care packages, funded by local donations, to help patients through difficult periods. The team has also launched two award-winning campaigns aimed at transforming patient care and workplace support. These campaigns focus on improving employer understanding of cancer and advocating for sanitary bins in public men's toilets to support prostate cancer patients.
Improved Healthcare Access
Members are already seeing practical improvements in local healthcare access. Several group members now receive life-saving care at Velindre Cancer Centre, avoiding long trips to London. Organisers hope that sharing their positive story will encourage more local people to seek support when they need it most.
