FCDO Warns of Ebola Outbreak in Rwanda and DRC

The Foreign Office has issued a new travel warning following the outbreak of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The FCDO has shared updated information regarding border crossings between Rwanda and DRC, noting that international borders are often not well marked in remote areas and that travelers could unknowingly cross into DRC. Military personnel may be present on both sides, and border closures could occur at short notice.

Ebola Outbreak Details

The FCDO added information about the declaration of an Ebola outbreak in DRC on 15 May. The average case fatality rate for Ebola is around 50%, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The WHO has declared this a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Travelers may experience heightened health screening at international borders in the region.

Impact on Travel and Events

The outbreak has already affected planned events in DRC. The national football team canceled a three-day World Cup preparation training camp and a farewell event in Kinshasa. FIFA stated it is monitoring the situation and is in close communication with the DRC football association to ensure medical and security guidance is followed.
