Man Killed Carer with Brick, Hid Body in Flooded Home

A man brutally killed his carer with a brick before hiding her body in his home as it flooded. David Walsh fatally attacked Irene Mbugua at his address in Markby Road, Winson Green in June last year. Her colleague raised the alarm after she failed to answer his calls, and police raided the address.

The Attack

Walsh, aged 35, ran out of a bedroom naked and hysterical. He spat at, bit, and lashed out at officers who had to use PAVA spray to detain him. He was removed and taken to a police station, after which his address was searched fully. The body of 46-year-old mother-of-four Ms Mbugua was discovered in the kitchen, which had been blocked by a sofa in front of the door. She was partially covered by debris from the ceiling which had collapsed due to the bathroom upstairs being flooded. Ms Mbugua was pronounced dead at the scene.

Court Proceedings

Walsh, who has schizophrenia, pleaded guilty to manslaughter by diminished responsibility as well as four counts of assaulting an emergency worker. At Birmingham Crown Court today (Thursday, May 21) he was sentenced to life with a minimum of 12 years, minus the 326 days he has spent on remand. Justice Mark Wall KC described the attack as a 'brutal and motiveless killing', adding it had caused a 'profound and life-long impact' to her family.

Victim's Family Impact

Ms Mbugua's teenaged son stated when he and his brother came to the UK she 'spoke of a good life, new beginnings, modern schools'. He said: 'I could envision all this in my head, little did I know she would not be with us in two weeks' time. My world was completely shattered, all dreams and desires tasted like bitter things in my mouth. I became numb imagining how painful her death was. I lost my world, my everything I was living for, she was my strength having raised us without a father, her every word was a promise to conquer the odds.'

Ms Mbugua's sister-in-law Nancy Mwangi described feeling 'completely broken' and said: 'We had so many dreams and hopes for a bright future in this land of opportunity, and she spoke about them with such joy and life in her eyes. Now all of that ended too soon with her death.'

Background

Ms Mbugua had worked for care agency Avida Supported Living. Walsh had been one of her clients, requiring someone with him all of the time due to having paranoid schizophrenia, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), aspergers, autism, learning difficulties and depression. He had lived on his own since 2024 with carers going into his home to stay with him. Crucially, Walsh had stopped taking his medication three months before the killing as well as stopped engaging with doctors. He also took cocaine.

Ms Mbugua was due to live in with him for two weeks up until June 24 of last year. All had been well until June 21. She was not heard from again after sending a message to her colleague at 6.11pm about Walsh washing up in the bathroom because his tap in the kitchen was broken. The court was told CCTV footage captured screams coming from the address at around 6.30pm which lasted several minutes.

Police Investigation

Ms Mbugua's colleague became concerned at her subsequent radio silence while their manager also noticed she had not clocked in. Police were called and eventually forced entry to the address at 10.17pm the next night, June 22. Initially they noticed running water coming from an overflowing bath which had flooded the bathroom upstairs. Blood was also noticed on the door.

Prosecutor Michelle Heeley KC said: 'Officers began to search the property. The defendant ran out of one of the bedrooms, he was completely naked and screaming. The officers called for backup and deployed their tasers in an effort to bring the defendant under control. It was a difficult task as the defendant was lashing out, but the officers managed to put him in handcuffs. They had to utilise PAVA spray to try and bring him under control. He aggressively resisted arrest and spat at officers as well as tried to bite and assault them.'

After taking Walsh to the station officers returned to the property in the early hours of June 23. There had still been no sight of Ms Mbugua. Ms Heeley continued: 'PC Hussain began to carry out a full search of the property. He noticed that there was a sofa propped up against the kitchen door. He pulled the sofa away and sadly at that point they found the body of Irene Mbugua on the kitchen floor. She had obvious injuries to her head and was semi naked on top. She was partially covered by the kitchen ceiling, which had collapsed owing to the flooding from the bathroom above.'

A post-mortem later concluded she had died from blunt force trauma to the head. CCTV footage had captured Walsh visiting shops, including JD Sports, and using Ms Mbugua's bank card. At one point he was heard on camera saying: 'We are free from death, we are free from pain, we have done what we have done.' Neighbours also spoke of him acting strangely. Police recovered a house brick in a Lidl bag in his bedroom. Walsh later confessed to a psychiatrist he had struck Ms Mbugua ten times with it as well as strangled her before moving her into the kitchen.

Sentencing

Justice Wall, passing sentence, said: 'It is agreed that there is no medical disposal available in this case. Despite the medical evidence of your condition, I have concluded that your level of retained responsibility for the killing is high. In reaching that conclusion I do not diminish the seriousness of your mental health condition.' In ruling that a life sentence was appropriate he stated he had 'no doubt' Walsh was a dangerous offender.

Justice Wall added: 'This was a brutal and unexplained attack. You committed it while mentally unwell, but you cannot be treated in hospital. You have shown an unwillingness or inability to take the medication necessary for keeping you well and have demonstrated a lack of engagement with those who are trying to care for you. You take illegal drugs when you would have been aware that they would exacerbate your mental health problems. There is no basis upon which I can have any confidence that the things which combined to make you behave in this way once are not likely to recur in the future.'

Phil Bradley KC, defending, stated it was Walsh's 'debilitating mental health that triggered her ultimate demise'. He added he had a 'real fondness' for Ms Mbugua who had 'helped him greatly'.
