A Sutton Coldfield mother who lost her battle with a rare asbestos-linked cancer has inspired her husband to continue her charitable work.
Brave Battle
Emily-Jane Scandrett, from Sutton Coldfield, was diagnosed with mesothelioma at the age of 40. She spent two years courageously fighting the rare cancer, which is typically found in men over 75. Despite the diagnosis, she raised more than £10,000 for Mesothelioma UK before her death on January 19 at the age of 42.
Continuing the Legacy
Her husband Ryan, 39, is now taking up her cause. He will take part in the Hallow 12 Parish Challenge on July 11, a 27.5-mile hike around Worcestershire, to raise funds for Mesothelioma UK and Edwards Trust. "It's going to be emotional," Ryan told BirminghamLive. "I want to continue what Emily-Jane started."
Call for Government Action
Ryan is also calling on the government to take asbestos more seriously, particularly by requiring asbestos management plans in public buildings. "We're broken and taking every day as it comes, but Emily-Jane did her best tirelessly campaigning - I'm going to continue with her campaign," he said.
How to Help
Those wishing to support Ryan's hike can donate to his fundraising page. The family hopes that Emily-Jane's story will raise awareness of mesothelioma and the dangers of asbestos exposure.
