Sutton Coldfield Care Home Hosts Floristry Workshop for Former Florist

Care UK's Mercia Grange care home on Lichfield Road in Sutton Coldfield organized a heartwarming flower arranging workshop for resident Janet Hunt, aged 86, allowing her to revisit her lifelong career in floristry. The event, held in partnership with London-based Freddie's Flowers, provided a selection of flowers and vases, enabling residents to create three beautiful bouquets.

Janet's Lifelong Passion for Florals

Janet Hunt's love for flower arranging began in her teenage years, inspired by her mother's interest. She pursued this passion professionally, becoming a florist and dedicating her life to sharing her skills. Janet taught flower arranging at her local church and even founded her own flower club, making her an expert in the craft.

Workshop Highlights and Resident Engagement

During the workshop, Janet took on a teaching role, using her own professional floristry scissors to guide fellow residents in arranging vases of flowers. She expressed delight with the experience, stating, "There was a good mixture of flowers, and I was very pleased with what I did at the end. Everyone caught on well." The activity not only revived Janet's passion but also fostered a sense of community and creativity among participants.

Care Home's Commitment to Resident Hobbies

Michael McNelis, Home Manager at Mercia Grange, emphasized the importance of such initiatives, saying, "Moving into a care home doesn't mean you should give up on your lifelong hobbies. That's why it was important for us to create an experience where Janet could revisit her passion for flower arranging and share her skills with others, just like she used to do; she was a very patient teacher to us all!" He also thanked Freddie's Flowers for their support in making the day possible.
