Birmingham Magistrates' Court granted a hygiene emergency prohibition order on Monday, August 24, forcing Al-Aqsa Halal Meat on Showell Green Lane in Sparkhill to close. The action followed a council inspection that uncovered an active cockroach infestation and mouse droppings contaminating food preparation areas.
Inspectors from Birmingham City Council found an "active infestation of cockroaches and mouse droppings at all levels over containers of prepared food" during their visit to the premises, operated by Al Aqsa Halal 786 Ltd.
Imminent risk to health
A Birmingham City Council spokesperson said: "The conditions found presented an imminent risk of injury to health and a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice was served." The notice was issued after the inspection, which was prompted by concerns identified during checks at a separate nearby premises on August 18, 2026.
The butchers had previously received a Food Hygiene rating of one with 'major improvement necessary' in May 2025, particularly in the management of food safety. This low rating highlighted ongoing issues at the establishment before the recent closure.
Premises to remain closed
The premises will remain closed until the council is satisfied that the imminent risk of injury to health has been removed. The business must address the infestation and cleaning issues before it can reopen.
