101-Year-Old Doris Switches on Christmas Lights with Penguin Pals
Centenarian's festive birthday with penguin visitors

A 101-year-old woman enjoyed a truly unforgettable birthday celebration, switching on her care home's Christmas lights accompanied by some very special feathered friends.

A Centenarian's Star Turn

Doris Griffiths, who celebrated her landmark birthday on December 3, took centre stage at The Spinney care home in Chingford. Wrapped in blankets against the evening chill, she flicked the switch to illuminate the festive display, wishing everyone a 'Merry Christmas'.

"What an honour and a lovely way to mark my birthday," said Doris, who has lived at the home for six years. The party was attended by residents, their families, care team members, and neighbours from the local community.

Feathered Friends Create Festive Cheer

The home's lifestyle team organised a unique surprise, arranging for two Humboldt penguins, named Pringle and Widget, to visit from Heythrop Zoological Gardens in Oxfordshire.

"It was a wonderful afternoon filled with lots of festive cheer," said Lisa Wright, home manager at The Spinney. "Our home was transformed into a winter wonderland, complete with snow and a visit from some feathered friends."

Residents, including 100-year-old Henry Clayton and 91-year-old Peggy, delighted in holding and stroking the penguins. The visit sparked conversations and shared memories of zoo trips and first penguin sightings.

A Home Forging Friendships and Celebrating Life

Samantha Carey, lifestyle coordinator, described Doris as "quite the character" who loves bingo, walks, and the home's beauty salon, and has forged a strong friendship group. "We loved that we could make her birthday extra special... It's wonderful to offer her a new experience at such an age," Carey added.

The festive afternoon also featured singer Brandon performing carols, including Doris's favourite, Driving Home for Christmas by Chris Rea. Doris, born in 1924, was joined by her daughter Sandra, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren in spirit.

The Spinney, located on Forest View, offers residential, specialist dementia, and end-of-life care. It is rated 'Good' by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and won a Great British Care Award in 2023 for 'Dignity in Care'.
