Free Summer Kids Activities at Astbury Mere Care Home Garden
Free Kids Activities at Astbury Mere Care Home

Astbury Mere Care Home in Congleton is opening its garden for six weeks of free children's activities every Monday throughout the school summer holidays. The programme aims to bring young people and residents together for shared outdoor experiences, providing local families with an engaging and cost-free option during the break.

Weekly Activities in a Purpose-Built Garden

Each week features a new activity designed for children to participate in alongside residents, including those living with dementia. The sessions are held in the care home's extensive garden, which boasts a brand-new children's play area, a vegetable and herb patch, a dedicated veterans area, and a refurbished summer house. This setting offers ample space for intergenerational interaction and outdoor fun.

Part of Porthaven's Garden Challenge

The initiative is part of Porthaven Care Homes' annual Garden Challenge. This year, instead of a shared theme, homes were encouraged to shape their outdoor spaces based on residents' preferences, using the gardens to enhance wellbeing and maintain community connections. Astbury Mere's garden development reflects this approach, with residents actively involved in choosing plants and deciding how to use different areas.

Residents and Children Benefit

Emma Hackett, home manager at Astbury Mere Care Home, highlighted the value of the programme: “Our garden is at its best when it is being enjoyed by our residents, relatives and members of the local community, so we are delighted to be opening it up for six weeks of free children’s activities this summer.” She added, “Bringing children and residents together can create wonderful moments. Children bring energy and curiosity, while our residents have their own experiences, stories and skills to share. These connections can be particularly meaningful for our residents living with dementia, who can enjoy taking part in activities and spending time with visitors in a familiar setting.”
