DWP's £10 Christmas Bonus for PIP, DLA & Attendance Allowance
DWP's £10 Christmas Bonus for PIP and DLA claimants

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed that its annual Christmas Bonus will be automatically paid to eligible claimants throughout December, providing a small financial boost during the festive period.

Who Qualifies for the Payment?

The one-off, tax-free £10 payment is aimed at supporting more vulnerable households, including pensioners and people with disabilities. The money will be paid directly into bank accounts for those who receive qualifying benefits during the designated qualifying week, which is typically the first full week of December.

Key benefits that make someone eligible include Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Disability Living Allowance (DLA), and Attendance Allowance. Those receiving the State Pension also qualify. However, it is important to note that individuals who only claim Universal Credit will not be eligible for this bonus.

No Application Needed

The DWP has stressed that there is no need for people to apply for the payment. The Christmas Bonus will be paid automatically to everyone who meets the criteria. The government's official guidance states: "You do not need to claim - you should get paid automatically."

Calls for the Bonus to be Increased

Despite the extra help being welcomed, the payment has faced criticism for its stagnant value. The amount has remained at £10 for decades, meaning its real-term value has significantly decreased due to inflation.

Critics argue that the bonus should be increased to make a meaningful difference to the budgets of low-income households, especially during the expensive Christmas season. Nevertheless, for those who receive it, the payment will offer some additional support in the run-up to Christmas.
