UK Snow Alert: 5cm Forecast for England and Scotland by Friday
5cm of snow forecast for parts of England this Friday

Parts of England and Scotland are bracing for a fresh bout of wintry weather, with forecasts predicting snowfall of up to 5 centimetres before the end of the week.

Snowfall Maps Pinpoint At-Risk Counties

Projections from WX Charts, which utilises data from Met Desk, indicate a significant downturn in conditions from around 6am on Friday, December 5. The weather maps highlight a swathe of northern and central England at risk of being blanketed.

Areas expected to see the heaviest snow include Cumbria, Yorkshire, Northumberland, Durham, Lancashire, and Staffordshire. Further flurries are also possible across counties such as the West Midlands, Worcestershire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, and Lincolnshire.

Widespread Disruption and Met Office Outlook

In Scotland, snow is predicted for the Borders region and large parts of the Highlands, mirroring the disruptive conditions further south. The Met Office forecast for early December suggests the week will remain unsettled.

Their outlook states: "Likely a continuation of the unsettled conditions seen for much of the week. Initially a weakening frontal zone will bring cloud and some patchy rain and drizzle, mostly to northern and eastern areas."

The forecast warns of widespread mist and fog forming on Friday morning before winds freshen. A further band of rain, potentially heavy on hills, is then expected to move eastwards across the country later on Friday.

Longer-Term Forecast for December

Looking further ahead to the end of the month, the Met Office indicates a shift. "There is a greater chance of spells of high pressure during this period, bringing more in the way of dry weather," the outlook adds.

This pattern increases the likelihood of overnight frost and fog. However, the forecast notes that spells of rain and stronger winds will probably continue, especially in western regions. Hill snow remains a possibility, mainly in the north, with temperatures expected to be near or slightly above average, interspersed with some colder spells.
