A young girl from Tipton is fighting for her life in the very hospital she was attempting to visit after being struck by a bus in a shocking incident that has left the community reeling.
The 11-year-old was hit by a single-decker bus on Steelhouse Lane, directly outside Birmingham Children's Hospital, at approximately 2:45 PM on Tuesday. Despite being just metres from emergency medical care, the severity of her injuries required immediate specialist attention.
Critical Condition in Paediatric Intensive Care
West Midlands Police have confirmed the young victim remains in a critical condition in the hospital's paediatric intensive care unit. The proximity to the world-renowned medical facility likely proved crucial in the rapid response to her life-threatening injuries.
An eyewitness described the harrowing scene, stating: "We saw the little girl lying in the road. It was absolutely horrific. The air ambulance landed nearby, and the emergency services were absolutely fantastic."
Transport Chaos and Emotional Impact
The collision caused significant disruption throughout Tuesday afternoon, with Steelhouse Lane completely closed between Whittall Street and Weaman Street while collision investigators examined the scene.
The bus driver, though physically unharmed, has been deeply affected by the traumatic incident. West Midlands Police are providing appropriate support to all those involved, including the driver and witnesses.
Community Support and Ongoing Investigation
As the young girl continues her battle in hospital, the local community has rallied around her family. Police are appealing for any witnesses who haven't yet come forward to contact them via Live Chat on their website or by calling 101, quoting log 2484 of 23 July.
This devastating incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of pedestrians, particularly children, in busy urban areas surrounding major hospitals.
