The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms covering Birmingham and 58 other local authorities, with the alert active from 3am on Wednesday until 10pm the same day. The warning also extends into Thursday with a separate yellow alert starting at 6am.
Residents across the West Midlands, including Birmingham, are being told to prepare for heavy downpours, lightning strikes, and potential power cuts over the next two days. The forecaster has warned of disruption to transport and a small risk of flooding, with hail also possible in some areas.

Wednesday's warning spans 19 hours and covers 59 local authorities, including Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Stoke-on-Trent, Telford and Wrekin, Warwickshire, the West Midlands Conurbation, and Worcestershire. A further yellow warning is in place from 6am on Thursday.
The Met Office stated there is “a small risk of flooding and disruption from thunderstorms on Wednesday,” urging residents to prepare for possible floods and chaos caused by lightning strikes. The warning highlights that “homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes or hail.”
Transport and safety advice
Transport delays are expected, as the Met Office warned: “Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.” Commuters in Birmingham are advised to check travel updates before heading out.
Households are being urged to take precautions ahead of the storms, including preparing an emergency flood kit with items needed in case of a power cut. The Met Office also issued safety guidance for anyone caught outside during a thunderstorm: “If you find yourself outside and hear thunder, protect yourself by finding a safe enclosed shelter (such as a car). Do not shelter under or near trees, or other structures which may be struck by lightning. If you are on an elevated area, move to lower ground.”
Warm temperatures despite storms
Despite the wet and thundery conditions, Birmingham is still forecast to feel warm on Wednesday, with a maximum temperature of 26C. The forecast indicates a cloudy start with heavy or thundery showers, but the cloud is expected to lift into the afternoon, bringing some brighter or sunny spells, although scattered heavy or thundery showers remain possible.
