Month's rain in 24 hours as Met Office issues warning

The Met Office has triggered an amber weather warning for parts of the UK, forecasting that a month's worth of rain could deluge the country within just 24 hours. This dramatic downpour is set to make for a very unsettled start to December, with the public being urged to prepare for significant disruption.

Widespread Warnings and Expected Deluge

An amber warning, indicating a heightened risk of severe weather, is in force for parts of Wales. Meanwhile, a less severe but still serious yellow warning for rain covers much of the rest of the UK. The alert came into effect at midnight on Monday, 1 December.

Senior Met Office meteorologist Marco Petagna stated that some areas could see an astonishing 120mm (almost five inches) of rainfall. He emphasised that this is falling on ground already saturated from a wet autumn, significantly increasing the risk of flooding. South Wales is expected to be one of the worst-hit regions.

Potential for Major Disruption

The Met Office has issued stark warnings about the potential consequences of the intense rainfall. Key risks include:

  • Widespread flooding in affected areas.
  • Road closures and extremely difficult driving conditions due to spray and flooding.
  • Likely cancellations and delays to bus and train services.
  • A potential for power cuts in some localities.
  • An increased risk of landslides on natural slopes and near transport infrastructure.

In anticipation of the severe conditions, some transport operators are already taking action. ScotRail has pre-emptively implemented speed restrictions on certain routes to ensure passenger safety.

Advice for the Public

Authorities are advising the public to take the warnings seriously and to prepare for potential isolation or travel problems. A key recommendation is to assemble a flood kit containing essential items. While Birmingham is not under an official warning, the entire country is expected to experience a notably wet and windy Monday, marking a soggy commencement to the new month.
