The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and Disability Living Allowance (DLA) claimants are facing a significant update from Labour Party Chancellor Rachel Reeves. From July, drivers on the Motability Scheme will encounter stricter mileage limits, higher excess mileage charges, and tighter cost controls. These measures aim to crack down on what the government describes as overly generous tax breaks that allowed some motorists to lease luxury vehicles. Additionally, drivers will now be required to pay Insurance Premium Tax on their vehicles.
Affected Vehicles and Expert Insights
Siobhan Doyle, a consumer writer at Carwow, highlighted that some models were available from as little as £75 with no advance payment required. These include the Dacia Spring, Kia Picanto, Dacia Sandero Stepway, Citroen e-C3 Aircross, and Dacia Jogger. Ms Doyle described the Dacia Spring as easy to drive with low running costs. Regarding the Kia Picanto, she noted its funky styling, surprising practicality, and low running costs, making it a great pick for a cheap car on the Motability scheme. However, she added that it is not particularly enjoyable on longer journeys and lacks wireless smartphone connectivity.
Further Vehicle Reviews
On the Dacia Sandero Stepway, Ms Doyle explained that it offers a hatchback with an SUV-style driving position, providing more space than most cars in its price range and a surprisingly comfortable ride. This makes it a strong choice for someone seeking a small but practical car, though its poor safety rating and limited equipment levels may be drawbacks. For the Dacia Jogger, she pointed out that interior materials are fairly basic, and the seating layout does not create a fully flat load floor when seats are removed, which may be less convenient for wheelchair users.
These changes are part of a broader effort to ensure the Motability Scheme remains sustainable and fair, while still providing essential mobility support for disabled individuals.
