Storm Chandra's Path Mapped as UK Braces for 80mph Gales and Torrential Rain
Storm Chandra: UK Faces 80mph Gales and Heavy Rain

The United Kingdom is on high alert as Storm Chandra charts a destructive course across the nation, bringing with it a severe cocktail of meteorological hazards. The Met Office has escalated its warnings, issuing a series of amber and yellow alerts for heavy rain, powerful gales, and significant snowfall, with gusts predicted to reach a staggering 80 miles per hour in exposed coastal regions.

Widespread Disruption and Danger to Life

Britons are preparing for a week of extreme conditions, with the storm expected to cause major travel disruption, potential power cuts, and school closures. The situation is particularly acute following the recent impact of Storm Goretti, which has left some areas more vulnerable. An amber warning for 'very strong winds', indicating a 'danger to life', is currently in effect for eastern and northern parts of Northern Ireland, where coastal gusts could hit 75mph.

Comprehensive Weather Alerts Across the Nation

The storm's influence is vast, blanketing much of the country. A complex array of yellow warnings for both rain and wind now covers the entirety of Ireland, while further alerts for rain and snow extend across much of Scotland and northern England, reaching down to Manchester. Another significant yellow warning has been issued for the Isles of Scilly and Pembrokeshire, where winds may peak at 80mph.

Chief Forecaster Paul Gundersen from the Met Office described the incoming system as a "complex spell of weather" driven by a deep area of low pressure. He highlighted specific risks, stating, "Heavy rain is an additional hazard as it falls on saturated ground in Dorset and southern parts of Devon, Somerset and Cornwall."

Snow Hazard and Extended Forecast

As Storm Chandra pushes colder air further north, snow becomes a serious concern. Forecasters predict accumulations of 10 to 20 centimetres over higher ground in the Pennines, southern Scotland, and the Highlands. The disruptive weather is set to persist, with yellow alerts for ice extending into Wednesday across Northern Ireland and a broad swathe of the UK from Glasgow down to Kent.

Further heavy rain is anticipated into Thursday for Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, and Dorset, raising the likelihood of additional flooding and travel problems across southwest England. The Met Office advises the public to stay informed and prepare for challenging conditions as Storm Chandra continues its path across the British Isles.
