Swiss New Year Fire Death Toll Hits 47; Teen Golf Prodigy Named
Swiss New Year Fire: Death Toll Rises to 47

A devastating New Year's Eve fire at a popular Swiss bar has claimed the lives of 47 people, with many more fighting for their lives in hospital. The tragedy unfolded at the Le Constellation Bar and Lounge in the ski resort of Crans-Montana.

Rising Toll and Critical Injuries

The confirmed death toll now stands at 47, with a further 115 people injured in the blaze. Swiss officials have stated that between 80 and 100 of those injured are in an "absolute emergency" or critical condition. Many victims are being treated for severe burns in specialist units across Switzerland.

The first victim to be publicly identified is Emanuele Galeppini, a 17-year-old Italian golf prodigy. A resident of Dubai and a member of the Rapallo Golf Club, he was celebrating with friends when the fire broke out. Reports indicate many of the victims were teenagers and young adults aged between 14 and 26.

Cause and Chaotic Scene

Investigators and eyewitnesses have pinpointed the cause of the fire to sparklers placed in champagne bottles. Disturbing footage appears to show a sparkler igniting the ceiling, causing flames to engulf the basement venue in a matter of seconds.

The bar's design is now under intense scrutiny. Described as a "trap," it reportedly had only one narrow exit. Authorities are investigating whether a "flashover" effect occurred, where combustible gases ignited simultaneously, explaining the fire's rapid and violent spread.

Ongoing Recovery and International Response

The identification process remains harrowing, with many victims so severely burned that authorities are relying on DNA samples and dental records. Desperate parents are still searching hospitals for missing children, with Italian and French nationals among those unaccounted for.

The scale of the disaster has overwhelmed medical services. Hospitals in Lausanne, Geneva, and other cities are treating people with third-degree burns covering 20% to 40% of their bodies. Officials have pleaded with the public to avoid risky activities to prevent further strain on exhausted emergency crews.

King Charles III issued a statement expressing his "heartfelt thoughts and prayers" for the victims of what he called a "nightmarish tragedy." Italy’s Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, is due to travel to the site to support affected Italian nationals.
