The Met Office has released a comprehensive list of the specific UK regions that are expected to avoid snowfall ahead of a significant five-day wintry weather event. Snow is forecast to fall every day from Friday through to Tuesday, with the period from January 23 to January 27 marked as a prolonged cold snap bringing Arctic and Atlantic conditions to many parts of the country.
Areas Forecast to Experience Snowfall
According to the latest maps and forecasts published by the Met Office, Arctic and Atlantic showers are set to bring snow to several regions. These include Scotland, particularly over Scottish mountains, as well as higher ground and hills across the north of England and the east of England. This widespread wintry weather means that not all areas will experience flurries, with some regions escaping the snowfall entirely.
Regions Set to Escape the Snow
The Met Office has confirmed that the following areas are likely to avoid snowfall from Friday, January 23, through to Tuesday, January 27:
- South West England
- South East England
- West Midlands
- East Midlands
- Greater London and the Home Counties
- Wales
This means residents in these regions can expect a respite from the snow, though other weather challenges may persist.
Weather Warnings and Conditions
Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern provided further insight into the forecast, noting that some southern and south-western areas have already experienced significant rainfall this week, with more expected. He explained that low pressure will bring spiralling bands of rain, leading to heavy downpours at times, which will push further north-east across central areas.
McGivern stated: "Interspersed by some brighter spells in the Midlands, but across northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, expect 50mm of rain in the most exposed spots. At 400m and above, expect snow to accumulate with the risk of ice and blizzards." He attributed this to colder air arriving, with temperatures around 6 or 7°C in the north-east and 9°C in the south, which is close to average for this time of year but may feel unpleasant due to strong winds.
Weekend Weather Outlook
McGivern added that persistent rain is expected to continue through the weekend, with the Met Office issuing a string of yellow rain alerts. He highlighted specific concerns: "Rain spiralling across Devon and Cornwall with standing water and issues on the road. Hill snow will continue through Scotland and north-east England overnight into Saturday." Despite the cold conditions, he noted that it would be "mostly" frost-free in many areas, offering some relief from the harshest winter elements.
This forecast underscores the varied weather patterns across the UK, with some regions bracing for snow while others contend with heavy rain and wind. Residents are advised to stay updated with local weather warnings and plan accordingly for travel and outdoor activities during this period.
