Birmingham faces widespread disruption today as schools close and transport services are affected by 33C heat, with the Met Office issuing a rare red weather warning for extreme heat. The warning is in place across the West Midlands until 9pm tomorrow, June 25.
School Closures and Remote Learning
Hundreds of pupils will either work remotely or be sent home early from school today, June 24, as temperatures soar. Parents received emails throughout Tuesday informing them of planned school closures for the rest of the week. Some schools and colleges said they had opted for remote learning today and tomorrow due to the challenges of keeping buildings cool and safe.
Transport Disruption
Rail operators are warning of delays and cancellations, urging passengers to only travel if absolutely necessary amid the scorching conditions. The extreme heat is expected to cause significant disruption to daily life, with the public advised to adapt their routines.
Health Warnings
West Midlands Ambulance Service is urging people to be safe in what it describes as "deadly" 33C heat this week, which could be "life-threatening." The Met Office warned: "An exceptional spell of hot and humid weather is expected across this region, with impacts to the general population highly likely. Significant disruption to daily life is likely and the public should take every effort to make precautions and adapt their daily routines where possible to cope with these levels of heat, which up to now have been extremely rare for the UK."
