A drink-driver who was three times over the legal alcohol limit has been warned that bailiffs will come knocking if he fails to pay his £1,118 fine. Tanyaradwze Magwenzi, 23, of Fairburn Close, Nottingham, crashed his Ford Eco Sport into a bollard on Constitution Hill in Birmingham on May 3.
When police arrived at the scene, they found Magwenzi had 106 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, three times the legal limit of 35 micrograms. The unemployed man initially denied being the driver but later admitted driving to the location after travelling from Derby via a Travelodge.
Prosecuting, Ms Begum said Magwenzi appeared dazed and smelt of alcohol. He pleaded guilty to drink driving at Birmingham Magistrates' Court on June 2. Despite having no previous convictions, magistrates imposed a financial penalty rather than a community order.
Magwenzi was banned from driving for 24 months and ordered to pay a total of £1,118, including a £738 fine, a £295 victim surcharge and £85 prosecution costs. The chair of magistrates warned him: 'If you fail to pay the fine, the bailiffs will come knocking on your door.'
