The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has issued a critical reminder to households across England and Wales: to receive the £150 Warm Home Discount automatically this winter, you must be named on your electricity bill by Sunday, 23 August. This applies to customers of 24 different energy suppliers, including major providers like British Gas, EDF, E.ON Next, Ovo, and Octopus Energy.
Who is eligible for the Warm Home Discount?
Eligibility for the scheme is primarily based on receipt of certain benefits. In England and Wales, households receiving Housing Benefit, Income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Pension Credit, or Universal Credit are among those who qualify. The DWP is urging eligible individuals to verify that their name appears on their electricity bill, as energy suppliers will rely on customer records as of the 23 August cutoff date.
This check is particularly important for those who have recently moved house, as they may not be listed on the bill for their current property. Even if you believe you are eligible, failing to be named on the bill could mean missing out on the automatic payment.
Government's push to ensure families get support
Labour Party Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh emphasised the government's commitment to easing financial pressures on families. She stated: "Families will be worried about their energy bills this winter and our focus is on giving them breathing space, as we continue to work to bring down bills."
She highlighted the scheme's expansion, noting: "Almost a million more families with children received the £150 Warm Home Discount last winter, after we expanded the scheme." Fahnbulleh also encouraged community action: "If you know someone who might benefit, please start spreading the word and encourage them to check they are named on their energy bill."

What to do if you don't get the discount automatically
