Dog trainer Vic Barlow, who has trained over 4,500 dogs in 32 years, has issued urgent advice for dog owners during the current hot weather. He warns that dogs are showing signs of exhaustion and that both owners and dogs are at risk of drowning if proper precautions are not taken.
Dangers of Swimming for Dogs
Barlow emphasizes that even strong swimmers can face hazards such as underwater branches, which can entangle dogs. He recalls an incident where a dog became trapped and was rescued by farmers. He advises owners to keep dogs close to shore and avoid deep water, especially if they are hesitant.
Personal Experience and Advice
Barlow shares his own frightening experience of drifting out to sea while swimming, from which he was rescued by a lifeguard. He stresses that lifeguards are not always available, so it is better to follow safety advice. He also warns that large lakes and rivers may appear warm but can cause cold water shock.
Tips for Small Dogs and Puppies
For small dogs that cannot swim, Barlow suggests allowing them to paddle near the shore. He recommends introducing puppies to warm water for a fun experience, keeping them close, and using a calm older dog as a companion.
About Vic Barlow
Vic Barlow has been training dogs for 32 years, helping over 4,500 dogs through his academy. He says, "After all this time communicating directly with dogs I can honestly say I have never met a dog I could not help.
