Heart screening in memory of Rugby man finds three needing tests

A heart screening day organised in memory of Rugby man Anthony Lane has identified three young people who require further cardiac investigation, with organisers saying the event may have helped save lives.

The session, run by Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), took place at Sutton Coldfield Town FC on Sunday, June 14 and saw 105 young people aged 14 to 35 screened for undiagnosed heart conditions. The event is part of an ongoing programme led by Rotary Club of Wylde Green and supported by Sutton Coldfield Charitable Trust, alongside fundraising by friends and family of Anthony Lane, who died suddenly of cardiac arrest aged 26 in 2022.

This is the third screening held in the area, following similar events in 2024 and 2025, during which 193 young people were screened and eight were referred for further tests.

Anthony’s father, Rotary Club president Paul Lane, said three referrals from the latest session underlined the importance of continued screening and awareness. He said the programme was inspired after learning Anthony had an undiagnosed heart condition with no prior symptoms.

He added that the family continues to support CRY’s work in advocating for wider screening for young people aged 14 to 35 across the UK.

CRY uses ECG testing reviewed by specialist cardiologists, with further echocardiograms and investigations carried out where necessary. The charity estimates that around 12 young people die each week in the UK from previously undiagnosed heart conditions, often without warning signs.

Dr Steven Cox, CEO of CRY, said the screening programme in Sutton Coldfield was making a tangible difference and praised the commitment of bereaved families and Rotary volunteers in supporting ongoing events. Further screening sessions are already planned, with funding in place for at least five additional annual events in the town. A fourth screening day is scheduled for June 13, 2027.
