Octopus Energy Pays Customers to Reduce Electricity Usage in Saving Sessions
Octopus Energy Pays Customers to Cut Electricity Use

Octopus Energy is providing financial incentives to its customers for reducing their electricity consumption during peak demand periods through its Saving Sessions scheme, as the ongoing cost of living crisis continues to strain household budgets. The initiative, which encourages participants to "power down and use less electricity at peak times to score Octopoints," is designed to alleviate stress on the national grid while rewarding consumers for making small adjustments to their daily routines.

How Saving Sessions Work

The energy giant explains that at times when many people are simultaneously using electricity, the grid becomes strained and often resorts to activating fossil fuel generators to meet demand. To counteract this, Octopus runs Saving Sessions that prompt customers to reduce their power usage. For each kilowatt-hour (kWh) saved during these periods, participants earn Octopoints, which translate into monetary rewards. Specific actions include switching televisions to standby, delaying laundry, washing dishes by hand instead of using a dishwasher, and generally adopting a low-power mode.

Octopus notes that sessions may be targeted to specific regions to address local bottlenecks, but the company ensures that everyone has fair opportunities to participate and continues to hold national events when needed. Customers receive email notifications about each session, indicating whether to "Power up" or "Power down." Power up sessions occur when there is abundant renewable energy, allowing customers to use extra electricity for free. Power down sessions happen during high demand, urging conservation.

Smart Meter Monitoring and Rewards

After each session, Octopus uses smart meter readings to calculate savings and assign rewards. Earnings are credited to the customer's Octoplus account within a few weeks. The company participates in energy flexibility markets, including the National Energy System Operator's (NESO) Demand Flexibility Service, which helps balance the grid during peak times. Octopus stated: "To reward you for shifting energy, we take part in a number of energy flexibility markets including NESO's Demand Flexibility Service that help to keep the grid balanced at busy times."

The scheme is part of a broader trend among energy suppliers to use demand-side response to manage grid loads, reduce carbon emissions, and lower costs for consumers. By engaging customers directly, Octopus aims to create a more flexible and sustainable energy system while providing tangible benefits during the cost of living crisis. The company emphasized that participation in each session requires explicit consent via email, and rewards are calculated based on individual meter data.

Impact on Households and the Grid

For households, the scheme offers a practical way to earn money by making minor behavioral changes. Typical savings can vary depending on the duration and intensity of each session, but the cumulative effect can be significant over time. Octopus claims that customers who actively participate can reduce their annual bills by tens of pounds. The company added: "Switch the TV on standby. Schedule the laundry for later. Skip the dishwasher and do it by hand. Go low-power mode and get paid in Octopoints for every kWh you save."

From a grid perspective, widespread adoption of such flexibility programs can defer the need for new generation capacity and reduce reliance on expensive and polluting peak-time power plants. Octopus's approach aligns with broader UK government and regulator strategies to enhance energy flexibility through smart technology and consumer engagement. The scheme is open to all Octopus customers with smart meters, and the company continues to expand its offerings based on user feedback and market conditions.
