How PIP Decisions Are Really Made
Official guidance confirms that your medical diagnosis alone does not determine eligibility. Instead, the assessment focuses strictly on how your condition impacts mobility and everyday routines. Many people tend to minimise their difficulties or only describe good days. However, an incomplete application makes it nearly impossible for officials to assess your needs correctly.
The DWP advises applicants to consider whether they can perform tasks:
- Reliably
- Timously
- Repeatedly
- Safely
Points across all categories are combined to calculate your final entitlement. Currently, you need at least eight points for the lower daily living award of £76.70 per week and 12 points or more for the higher rate of £114.60. For mobility, eight points secure £30.30 weekly, while 12 points bring £80. Maximum support across both categories equals roughly £778 monthly.
Common Pitfall: Downplaying Your Needs
Many applicants naturally minimise their struggles to avoid feeling awkward or sounding like they complain. But withholding details often leads to outright rejection or a much lower award than deserved. According to the latest Government figures, only 43% of completely new applications have been approved under standard procedures over the past five years. That statistic excludes claims voluntarily stopped, transfers from old disability benefits, or those processed under special terminal illness rules.
