The Warm Home Discount scheme will reopen in October 2026, providing a £150 one-off discount on energy bills for the winter period. The Government initiative is expected to support around six million households across England and Wales.
The discount is designed to help some of the poorest households with their energy costs during the colder months. It is applied either as an energy credit or as top-up vouchers, depending on how customers pay their bills.
Who is eligible for the £150 Warm Home Discount?
Households will qualify if they receive any of the following benefits: Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, or Employment and Support Allowance (ESA). Low-income pensioners receiving the Guarantee Credit part of Pension Credit will also be eligible.
The scheme has been extended this year to cover everyone who claims Universal Credit, meaning more people qualify for the £150 than in previous years. The qualifying date for the payment is August 23, 2026, and applicants must be named on their electricity account or bill on that date.
How the discount is applied
The Warm Home Discount opens each October, and it is up to energy suppliers to decide when to apply the discount. For most recipients, this happens between November and January.
According to Martin Lewis' Money Saving Expert, "All households in England and Wales receiving a qualifying means-tested benefit should get the discount automatically between October 2026 and March 2027."
What recipients need to know
Eligible households should receive the discount automatically if they are in receipt of a qualifying benefit and were named on their electricity account on the qualifying date. A letter will be sent to confirm whether the discount will be applied automatically or if more information is needed.
Money Saving Expert warned recipients to be wary of scams and advised anyone unsure about the process to contact the Warm Home Discount helpline when it reopens. The scheme provides crucial support for vulnerable households as attention turns to keeping homes warm during the winter months.
